Ring Metoidioplasty

Description
Ring Metoidioplasty offers similar results to the Metoidioplasty, with the addition of urethral lengthening. The Ring Meta is a technique developed by Dr. Ako Takamatsu in Japan. She graciously shared this with me in 2007. They are increasing popular as they are reasonably priced, allow a gentleman to stand to pee (ideally), are ideal also for thinner candidates (less than 190#), leave only a vaginal dimple (penetration is not an option), retain all sensitivity, and are less associated with complications as my skill has evolved. They do require a suprapubic catheter (SP) and require a much longer recovery time than the simple meta. Scrotoplasty (testicle implants) can be added but as a second surgery three months or more after the Ring Meta. May be combined with Hysterectomy. Fistulas are difficult to repair but can be addressed at the second surgery. I prefer the ring over other metas with urinary hook-up because it does NOT require vaginectomy.

Phalloplasty is still the best GRS procedure for gentleman that are heavy with significant pelvic/pubic fat (which would obscure the more modest meta results).

Pre-op and Post-op

  • Cease taking aspirin / aspirin-like products one week prior to procedure.
  • Arrive in San Mateo 2 days before your procedure. You will be admitted to the hospital the day of your procedure for prep.
  • You will be admitted to the hospital one night for the Ring Meta, two nights if combined with a hysterectomy.
  • Plan to stay in San Mateo for 7-10 days past your discharge, and see Dr. Bowers for a follow up visit the week after surgery.

More Information

Please note that Dr. Bowers does not presently offer Phalloplasty or Vaginoplasty.

Since ring metoidioplasty is dependent upon the impact of testosterone on the genitalia, please be prepared to discuss your hormone regimen and history with Dr. Bowers. Ring Metoidioplasty should be considered a final destination for surgery. Please let Dr. Bowers know your expectations and any future plans for genital surgery.
